Make Hotteok at Home

Mostly they resemble small pancakes, filled donuts (read to the end to find out about one more very tasty one). A ball of flour or sticky rice dough is filled with a concoction of sugar, ground peanuts and cinnamon powder and then pressed flat on a hot surface and fried for one or two minutes on each side or deep fried..

It is almost as fun to watch the experts make these tasty treats as it is to eat them.  The professionals are super fast! The filling is made of crushed nuts (PEANUTS in most cases, so those allergic to peanuts must be sure what nuts are used), cinnamon, and sugar are added and then the flour is wrapped around the filling and then flattened out.

Min Hee enjoyed the research!

The cost is about 1,000-2,000KRW for one or two filled pancakes. Hotteok are often served in paper cups or wrapped in paper because they are usually served right off the cooking surface and are hot.  Also, you do not want any of the tasty fillings escaping!

So then we had to make some at home as part of the research.  You can purchase the box of ingredients needed at most supermarkets and there are different brands as well. Step one is to add the flour, yeast, and water then mix that up very well.

After that, the dough needs to be kneaded for 5 minutes or so.

Pull some of the dough into about a golf ball sized ball or a little bigger. Use your fingers to make a spoon sized cup and spoon in some of the filling. Then wrap it so that the filling is in the center. Then flatten the ball out. Make sure the filling is not at the surface.

Use light oil and medium heat to cook the lovely treats. About two minutes on each side or until they are browned.

Let them cool off and enjoy over a plate! Be careful not to drip the filling on your clothes, and ENJOY!!!
